• Aluminum Oxide - lower cost, but still a very high quality abrasive that can be used for sanding floors, removing paint and varnish, and removing jagged pieces of edges. 
• Silicon Carbide - with a hardness close to that of a diamond, these abrasive grains offer consistent fast cutting action on hardwood floors, concrete, most ferrous metals, composites, stone, glass and plastics.  Also capable of sanding floors to remove layers of paint, polyurethane, shellac and varnishes on hardwood floors.
• Zirconia (Zirc) - most popular type of abrasive for sanding wood floors with a belt sander.  Capable of heavy stock removal when attached to a stationary drum sander as well.
• Ceramic - A premium self-sharpening abrasive that resists loading and provides a cooler grinding action on its own, but enhanced with a grinding aid for even cooler cutting and resistance to loading. Often used for sanding pre-finished floors, hardwood floors, and other exotic floor surfaces.
